Malaga Sin Films company produced 'Guernica', recreating the destruction of the Basque town in 1937 and starring James D'Arcy and Maria Valverde. Sony distributes the tape is directed by Koldo Serra and has an exceptional budget for the Spanish cinema: 6 million 'Guernica' is rolled in scenarios of the Basque Country. / David Herranz It is one of those key episodes in the history of Spain, but the film has not paid much attention. Until now. While Antonio Banderas drove the project on the creation of Picasso's monumental work based on the bombing of Guernica, '33 days' -a script right now caught in a legal tangle by their producer-bankruptcy, another two, Malaga, José Alba and Carlos Clavijo, put up another film based on that dramatic event that shook the whole of Europe. Its aim was to recreate the bombing, "assures Alba most important event of our civil war and more transcended from the international point of view," so I needed a project in English and with dimensions of Hollywood, but production Spanish. And despite the difficult moment of our cinematography-the average budget has fallen to 1.2 million euros, these Malaga have gathered an investment of almost six million euros, an international cast and the complicity of the multinational Sony for worldwide distribution film entitled 'Gernika'.
From a green Basque countryside, where started shooting a few days ago, the producer of Sin Films, José Alba, answering the phone, while the director Koldo Serra ('Backwoods') directs the scene of soldiers. The Malaga then remember how the project was born a few years ago in Los Angeles, where he met his partner, Carlos Clavijo. "They talk about bringing to the screen the bombing of Guernica, when an American screenwriter Barney Cohen approached them with the same idea. We saw clear! "Alba said, adding that eliminated the argument-tone Hollywood story of a nurse and a Republican military to make it a war story starring journalists and the search for truth explains.
Thus, 'Gernika' tells the bombing of the Basque town in 1937, an event that completely destroyed the population and who witnesses an American journalist, Henry. A character based on the English writer George Steer, which went down in history for his chronic reporterismo on slaughter. A story that was read precisely which Pablo Picasso in Paris and which determined the name and the focus of the work started painting at the time: 'Guernica'.
Responsible for giving life to the protagonist is James D'Arcy ('Master and Commander'), whose role also features "of great reporters who covered the war as Robert Cappa or Ernest Hemingway," says the producer José Alba, adding that this bombing "is not treated as a chapter of the Civil War, but as a foretaste of the Second World War and what the German and Italian army implemented in Guernica was a new type of weapon and attack against civilians ".
Recreate the bombing
Indeed, the bombing scenes that recreate much of the budget of this film, with special effects specialist Raul Romanillos (who won the Goya for 'El Niño') will be, while digital special effects is responsible T38 User (which was responsible for giving life to the robots 'Automaton' tape). "We considered himself be filmed in Romania and Germany, but in the end the conditions were to roll in the Basque Country and Aragon," explains José Alba, producer of 'The Sandman' (2007) and 'Camp Flipy' (2010).
María Valverde ('Exodus'), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean'), Alex Garcia ('Kamikaze') and Ingrid García-Jonsson (who recently shot in Malaga 'Toro') complete the cast of this production directed by Bilbao Koldo Serra. "The manager always remembered as a story when in 2012 two Andalusian -Alva and Clavijo- and a New Yorker Daniel Dreifuss- offered a story that spent their own land. We could not say no, "he concludes.
The film tells the story of a journalist who reported the bombing and caused that Picasso painted his 'Guernica'
