‘Agent Carter’: Jarvis Tells Us If Peggy Is His OTP
Also, you should be very worried about human Jarvis' survival.
by Crystal Bell / MTV News / 03 Feb 2015
Jarvis takes a backseat in tonight’s (February 3) episode of “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” but according to James D’Arcy, he becomes “privy” to a certain piece of information that could be a total game-changer for Peggy (Hayley Atwell).
Speaking to MTV News over the phone, D’Arcy revealed that tonight’s Peggy-centric episode (“The Iron Ceiling”) finds Peggy, Thompson (Chad Michael Murray), and the Howling Commandos on an important mission in Russia to expose the Black Widow project (yes, the Black Widow). Meanwhile, Jarvis makes an unsettling discovery back home. Will this “important piece of information” reunite Peggy and Jarvis in light of Howard’s betrayal? Here’s what D’Arcy had to say:
MTV News: As we saw in last week’s episode, Jarvis is caught in the middle between his loyalty for Howard and this newfound friendship that he has with Peggy. Given Howard and Peggy’s falling out, how does this affect Jarvis in upcoming episodes?
James D’Arcy: You’ve hit the nail on the head. Jarvis definitely stuck in a very complex situation in terms of where his true loyalties lie. Peggy is now in a position where she doesn’t know who she can talk to. The one person she thought she could talk to was Jarvis, but now apparently not because he’s seems to be working with Howard and she’s definitely not talking to Howard. And then there’s her whole situation at the SSR, which is nobody is taking her seriously. So that is exactly where we’re at, and Jarvis feels bad about it.
In this next episode, something pretty dramatic happens, which is Peggy gets entrusted with a mission. So she’s headed to Russia.
MTV: How much is Jarvis in this episode? It sounds very Peggy-centric.
D’Arcy: You are going to see Jarvis a little bit, but this episode is predominantly about her trip to Russia and meeting up with the Howling Commandos again. If you are a “Captain America” fan, it’s going to be really fun because Dum Dum Dugan is back and characters that you remember from the movie are back doing that thing that Marvel does so well, which is interconnecting their worlds. But there’s a very important piece of information that Jarvis is privy to — I won’t say how it happens — but he’s privy to quite an important piece of information in this episode.
MTV: Does it have anything to do with the vile of Captain America’s blood Howard had Peggy steal from the SSR?
D’Arcy: We haven’t quite got there yet, but that is not something that is going to go away. This is a different piece of information.
MTV: Will Howard be sticking around New York City, and can we expect to see him pop up again in these final four episodes?
D’Arcy: Yeah, you can expect to see him again. I can’t tell you when, but you can.
MTV: Who came up with Jarvis’ lying tick? I noticed that he touched his ear in the beginning of the episode with the smugglers and again later in the episode when he lies to Peggy about Howard’s Blitzkrieg Button. That was such a funny little quirk.
D’Arcy: Well spotted! It happened in the first scene as well. The writers came up with it, and it’s quite a funny little tell. I didn’t know anything about it until I saw it in the script. I’m sure Jarvis told some lies in episodes one, two, and three, so I suppose I should have scratched my ear!
MTV: Fans online seem to really enjoy Jarvis and Peggy’s banter. You and Hayley Atwell have great chemistry. Is there ever going to be any romantic development?
D’Arcy: I’m not quite sure how to answer that question because I don’t want to give anything away. We definitely had a slightly awkward moment in the second episode… Ultimately, I would say that Jarvis is a pretty stand-up guy. I think he’s truly a good person, trying to do his best. Either way, at some points, they seem to descend into a rather fun bickering brother and sister, which I quite enjoy. Right now, they’re barely on speaking terms, so there won’t be a whole lot of that in this next episode, but ultimately, they’ll find a way to get back to that.
MTV: I’m a little worried for Jarvis. Agent Souza is hot on his trail, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to back down anytime soon. How will that play out for Jarvis in these next episodes?
D’Arcy: It all comes together in these final four episodes. Peggy’s world completely collides, and I think you are probably right to be slightly worried about Jarvis.
MTV: When Jarvis was being interrogated by the SSR in episode three, how close was he to actually cracking? If Peggy hadn’t put herself in the line of fire, would he have confessed anything?
D’Arcy: No way! Never. Absolutely not. They could have tortured him for months, and he would have been a steel trap. This a man who went through the second World War; he would have never said anything. He’d sooner be water boarded! I have to be honest, I’ve never watched the show, so I’m not sure how they cut it together to make it look like I might crack, but I don’t think he would have ever cracked.
MTV: Have you spoken to Paul Bettany about your shared Marvel connection to Jarvis?
D’Arcy: No, I haven’t seen Paul in a while. The last time I saw him, he wasn’t even playing Jarvis, so no, we have not had a conversation about it. I’m sure when we do run into each other, that will be the first thing that we talk about.
MTV: You mean all British actors don’t hang out with each other all of the time? You’re not in a club with Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston? I’m shocked!
D’Arcy: It’s actually a secret, but we all live in the same house. It’s just a very big house, and sometimes, you don’t go into the east wing. So I haven’t been to Paul’s wing in quite some time.
MTV: Does Cumberbatch do his laundry or does he let it sit around for months?
D’Arcy: Does he do his laundry? No, he has Eddie Redmayne do his laundry.
