James D’Arcy talks Exorcist: The Beginning
"Only two minutes of the original film is being kept," actor D'Arcy, who is perhaps best known in America for his role in "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," tells Zap2it.com on the Oscar red carpet.
D'Arcy reveals that Harlin recast two of the roles, including his, who was originally played by Gabriel Mann in Paul Schrader's version. The other role recast is that of a doctor named Rachel, who was played by Clara Bellar in Schrader's version.
"I don't know if it's the same script even, so whatever Gabriel was playing, I don't know that it's the same kind of character, it's the same name but beyond that I don't know," D'Arcy says.
In fact, according to the New York Times Harlin brought in three new writers to rewrite William Wisher and Caleb Carr's original script.
"I don't know how many people had seen what Paul had done, so I think everyone was a little confused at first and a little mystified. I'd never heard of a film being completely reshot before. They cast me really late as well, so I kind of turned up and didn't know what was happening."
The British actor, who admits that he's not a fan of horror movies and has never watched the original 1973 film by director William Friedkin, says fans can expect Harlin's version to be "scary and disgusting."
"Well, it is Renny Harlin. I think it is going to be more actiony and it's going to be fast and all the things that Renny does really well," says D'Arcy of the new version.
"I wouldn't watch it," he says of Schrader's cut. "I just do what I'm supposed to do. I'd s*** myself and then spend three nights with the duvet up [to my chin] kind of going, 'I can't sleep.' So I don't watch horror movies. And this one I may not be able to watch either."
