James D'Arcy Joins Christopher Nolan's war film, Dunkirk
- Category: Latest updates
We can now guess why James had this super-short haircut last week, posted by Tess Ward on twitter (May 17th). After Guernica, James seems to have attached himself to another gripping and powerful war story.
Batman Begins director, Christopher Nolan began production on his World War II epic action thriller "Dunkirk", on location in the historical coastal town on Monday, 23 May 2016.
From the Warner Bros, press release, we have a short synopsis and a cast list that include veterans like Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy and James D'Arcy with a cache of fresh faces playing young English soldiers, most notably singer Harry Styles (One Direction) in his acting debut.
The film follows "Operation Dynamo", a massive Allied operation that saw the evacuation of over 330,000 British Expeditionary Force and Allied soldiers who were trapped along the beaches of Dunkirk in Northern France in 27 May to 04 June of 1940 by overwhelming German forces advancing rapidly through the largely undefended Ardennes. Winston Churchill called it a "miracle of deliverance."
French photographer Pierre Volot has been sharing photos from the Dunkirk set on his twitter, instagram and facebook accounts. Cinefilos, La Voix Du Nord and Daily Mail reported on the first day of filming. Another photographer to follow is Julian Valcke facebook.
Filming began at 5 am on Monday morning with a dozen soldier extras on the beach Leffrincoucke at Malo. They were fussing with soldier cut-outs. The trompe l'oeil sihouettes of soldiers & trucks were there to amplify the scale of the army. On the streets of Malo, actors were being shown how to handle their replica weapons, military vehicles were parked nearby and set designers continued to work to make the city look 1940's. Nolan is using authentic Second World War battleships as well, as he is keen to avoid having too many digital effects.
In several streets in the area of Malo-les-Bains were visible military trucks of the era, sand bag dams and Nazi propaganda leaflets dropped from the air ( "Surrender and survive", "Go to survive "). On the beach, the Kursaal congress was converted factory from the 1940s, while the eastern pier was rebuilt exactly.
Hans Zimmer is said to be working on the music score.
Filming is underway in France for the next 6 weeks in Dunkirk or Dunkerque (French), then moves to Holland for a month, to UK for less than a week, and completing in Los Angeles. It is expected to go on until July 3. The production code name is "Bodega Bay." The film equipment is stored at Casino Square and in containers on the beach while costumes are at the Regional Contemporary Art Funds (FRAC) of Dunkirk, in the old building of the shipyards. The main actors will dress at L'Escale, a nearby hostel.
