Letters can be the most intimate form of expression, defiantly public, or a window onto somebody's life at a particular time. They can be funny or tragic, or in the case of some novels, a useful way for a character to convey, or miss, vital information.
The programme includes a number of real letters from people such as Scott of the Antarctic, Elizabeth I and Siegfried Sassoon, plus fictional letters from works by Hardy, Austen and Shakespeare.
There are letter scenes from operas by Mozart and Tchaikovsky, plus letter-related music by Janacek, Britten and Leonard Cohen.
Letters read by James D'Arcy:
Letters by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Letters from the Front, Letters of Giuseppe Verdi, Trans Charles Osborne, William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Letter by Robert Falcon Scott to his Wife, Siegfried Sassoon's Public Statement of Defiance - The Times Newspaper, Letter by Oscar Wilde to Lord Alfred Douglas, Letter by Napoleon Bonaparte to Josephine.
Letters read by Rosalie Craig:
Sylvia Plath Letters Home, Thomas Bailey Aldrich's The Letter, Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, Amy Lowell's The Letter, Jane Austen's Emma, Edward Lear's letter to Harry Hinde, Queen Elizabeth I - Letter to King Erik of Sweden, The Letter by Dana Gioia.
Music Played between readings:
Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Aaron Copland's Letter from Home, Michael Torke's Overnight Mail, Leos Janacek's String Quartet no.2, 2nd movement, Verdi's Grand March from Aida, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie's Twelfth Night, Act II sc5, Rebecca Clarke Midsummer Moon, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Scott of the Antarctic, Clementi's Sonatina in G major Op. 36, Finzi's Requiem da Camera, Please Mister Postman by The Beatles, Brahms' String Quartet in C minor, Op.51 "Romance," Britten's Courtly Dances and Night Mail, Gabriel Faure's Chanson d'Amour, Leonard Cohen's The Letters.
