Benjamin DisraeliYoung Benjamin Disraeli, the 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, before entering politics was flamboyant in dress and manners and something of a colourful character on the London scene. He was provocative and precocious, a womanizing dandy with manic energy and possessing huge self-confidence. He rose to become the most gifted parliamentarian of the nineteenth century, a superb orator, writer and dazzling wit. He twice served as the Prime Minister, a great favourite of Queen Victoria and is best known for bringing the Suez Canal under British control.

A radio play painting the flamboyant life of the young Benjamin Disraeli before he entered politics and his relationship with his sister.
References to Shakespeare and his plays are made during the family's discussions about Benjamin's fitness as a Member of Parliament. Benjamin compares himself to Prince Hal (who later becomes King Henry V). His father, trying to write an essay on Shakespeare, is concerned with his son's lack of moral compass and evokes The Merchant of Venice and Measure for Measure instead. To cure his much-loved sister's depression, the young Disraeli strives to weave his "spell" - whilst also finding time for seductions, penning novels, confronting anti-semitism and standing as an MP

QuotesOnce at a social gathering, Gladstone said to Disraeli, "I predict, Sir, that you will die either by hanging or of some vile disease". Disraeli replied, "That all depends, sir, upon whether I embrace your principles or your mistress."
