SynopsisIn a bitter struggle for absolute power, three single-minded and self-centred men drag their country into bloody civil war.In 13th century Norway, two men compete for the throne. They are Earl Skule, brother of the recently deceased king, and Hakon Hakonssen, who is the king's son born out of wedlock. Hakon wants to create a united Norway, but Skule steals his idea in his thirst for power, egged on by Bishop Nicholas. The bishop has himself been a pretender to the throne; bitter and spiteful, he sows discontent between the two pretenders so none can reach the throne. He burns a letter revealing Hakon's legitimate origins to sow disunity that leads to civil war. Hakon has married Skule's daughter, Margaret who finds herself in a terrible conflict of interest. She chooses her husband in the end. In a dramatic scene, Skule realizes that he has only loved power and has never possessed the great ideas of a king, With his son, Peter, he goes forth to meet Hakons' men. Adapted for radio drama by Martin Jenkins
Based on a historical play in five acts written in 1863 by Henrik Ibsen

Bishop Nicholas: Never let it be seen that you have not an equal faith in yourself! Speak as if you had it; swear positively that you have it - and everyone will believe you.
Skule: If I only had a son! If I had a son to come after me in all the great inheritance!
Bishop Nicholas: (eagerly) Yes, my lord? If you had a son -?
