The Drowned Earth presents a terrifying future in which solar radiation has caused the melting of polar icecaps and all the major cities of the world have become submerged lagoons. The unbearable heat drives most of remaining humanity to head north or south away from the equatorial regions. Set in the year 2145, London is a primordial swamp populated by giant iguanas, albino alligators and endless swarms of malarial insects. The story follows Dr. Robert Kerans and his team of scientists sent to survey the surreal cityscape before their final abandonment. The expedition crew is slowly being transformed, physically and psychologically, mutating back into a more primitive form & state of consciousness. Keran and Beatrice start to embrace their own de-evolution until the arrival of the maverick scavenger Strangman and his piratical crew who plan to drain the lagoon to loot the streets of London below. Kerans acts by destroying the dam, returning London to its flooded state. In the end, Kerans escapes to head south towards those dense jungles as he seeks a return to his primordial state in the search of a new paradise, despite the danger to himself.

Quotes & ReviewsNot having read the book, I can’t comment on the adaptation but it felt like a slickly told story, motoring through its central premise of the world going backwards, in all senses. We see this primarily through the eyes of lovers Beatrice and Kerans, the ever-excellent Hattie Morahan and James D’Arcy both in glorious vocal form, as their passion becomes increasingly primal… A powerfully evocative reading of the story makes this a recommended listen. --- Ian Foster
