Role: Tom Bertram
The older son of Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, he is seven years older than Fanny. Tom’s principal interest is in carousing in London society and enjoying the pleasures of the theatre with his friend, Mr. Yates. Tom incurs large debts from gambling, forcing Sir Thomas to sell the church position that would have gone to his younger brother, Edmund. One celebratory journey leaves Tom with a fever and a treatment of leeches. He later begins to appreciate Fanny and learns the errors of his ways.
Plot: At age 10, Fanny Price is sent by her destitute mother to live with her aunt and uncle, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram. As a child, she was often made to feel that she was the poor grateful relation but when she reaches the age of 18 and in the absence of her uncle who had left on an extended business trip, she begins to enjoy herself. When Henry Crawford and his sister Mary become neighbors, opportunities abound. Edmond falls in love with Mary but she wants to marry a money with money and not someone destined for a career as a clergyman. Meanwhile, Fanny’s love for her cousin, Edmond, prevents her from accepting Henry Crawford’s proposal of marriage.
Trivia & Facts:
- In the play rehearsal scene, James D’Arcy as Tom Bertram wears a brocade suit that was also worn by Corin Redgrave as Sir Walter Elliot in the 1995 Persuation.
- Almost 100% of the film was shot in Newby Hall. Inside the house, musical chairs was the order of the day; furniture being moved from one room to another to accommodate the set designers. Some rooms were completely transformed to create new sets. Fanny’s room, normally a bleak storage room in the attic, was built on site. The red passageway to the Victorian wing was beautifully blanked off creating a perfect Georgian entrance to the dining room. False walls were built to mask others that weren’t period.
- For exterior shots: A large commercial flock of sheep were not 18th century and needed to be rounded up and moved. A new flag was made for the flagpole with a crest correct for the period. A garden statue of a wood nymph had to be replaced. It’s interesting that such care was taken over accuracy as neither flag nor statue can be seen close enough by the television viewer to matter.
Film Location: Newby Hall, Skelton on Ure, North Yorkshire (England)
Awards & Nominations:
Billie Piper was nominated for 2007 TV Quick Award for Best Actress
Quotes from the film:
Mary Crawford: You think if you shake me hard enough something profound with come out, but I assure you, I am profoundly shallow.
Tom was seriously under-used, considering he was being played by the delectable James D’Arcy. On the plus side, we did cadge a prolonged glimpse of D’Arcy’s bare chest, the downside being that it was covered in large, slimy medicinal leeches at the time, supposedly to help drain away his alcohol-induced fever.
